Union Square, located a short walk from InterContinental San Francisco, is one of the most popular attractions in the city for tourists and locals alike. Established in 1850, Union Square was named in honor of the Union supporters at the start of the Civil War. The square was completely renovated in 2002 to feature a welcoming promenade for special events, a seasonal ice skating rink, and the opportunity to admire the surrounding skyline. Union Square is flanked by Powell, Sutter, Post and Geary Streets and is the prominent shopping district in San Francisco.

The theater district is just off Union Square and is home to the acclaimed American Conservatory Theatre and the Golden Gate Theatre. Live music and dancing can be found in a number of places such as the Plush Room for cabaret, Biscuits & Blues for live blues music, and Ruby Skye dance club. Union Square also buzzes with the most famous San Francisco icon of all - cable cars. The Powell/Market cable car line runs directly through the heart of Union Square and turns around a few blocks away at Market Street. [Top]
